Joanne Chong

Founder of Altum Pilates

InstagramLinkedIn

  • Joanne Chong embarked on her Pilates journey in 2012, driven by the debilitating pain of plantar fasciitis. Seeking relief, she found herself at a Pilates studio, and within six months of bi-weekly sessions, she not only alleviated her foot condition but also discovered a profound mental clarity and a renewed perspective on life.

After years of teaching, Joanne co-founded Altum Pilates, with the goal of deepening the engagement with Classical Pilates in the community while adhering closely to the foundational teachings and intents of Joseph Pilates himself. As a life-long learner with a particular interest in mentoring the next generation of Pilates teachers, Joanne has studied and trained extensively around the world, from Zurich, Manila, Singapore, to hone and expand her Pilates education and practice.

In Joanne’s classes, she aims to bring her clients through every movement and apparatus being tied back to its original purpose, ensuring that the practice remains true to its roots and accessible to all.

Yan Huang

Senior Pilates Teacher

Instagram

  • A cancer survivor since the age of 23, Yan’s journey into movement and wellness has been one of profound transformation. Her childhood, though marked by periods of ill health and a sedentary lifestyle, saw her regain strength and vitality through dance and Asian nutritional therapy. However, at 23, her life was upended by an unexpected cancer diagnosis. This pivotal experience not only reshaped her perspective on health but also ignited a passion for movement and well-being that continues to inspire her work today.

A former competitive athlete and luxury business owner, Yan’s driven and ambitious nature led her to face the “invisible” challenges of modern life—burnout, self-sabotage, and hormonal imbalances. Overcoming these obstacles deepened her understanding of true health and the power of resilience.

Since 2013, Yan has been teaching in the movement industry, specialising in Pilates since 2015. Her approach is grounded in the belief that health is cultivated through intentional movement—both internal and external—balanced with stillness, mindful breath, and a strong heart-mind connection. She also focuses on building sustainable practices, helping clients create small but impactful systems that lead to lasting change.

Through her teaching, Yan empowers women and cancer survivors to embrace movement and adopt integrative lifestyles that enhance vitality, resilience, and longevity.

As a proud Cancer Warrior since 2007, of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Yan also spends her time championing awareness for Cancer Warriors, and how exercise plays a fundamental part of their recovery and well-being.

Wang Zhiling

Pilates Teacher

Instagram

  • Zhiling initially underestimated Pilates, favouring high-impact activities like running, spinning, and weight training. However, the physical toll of these demanding exercises began to manifest in lower back pains, exacerbated by an injury at the gym. On a doctor’s recommendation, she embarked on her Pilates journey in 2017, with Joanne Chong as her first instructor. Initially a rehabilitation measure for spinal health, Pilates soon transformed into a deeply engaging practice for Zhiling. The progressive relief of her back pain and the strengthening and stretching of her body with each session ignited a new passion, revealing the therapeutic power of controlled, mindful movement.

As her practice deepened, so did her fascination with the Pilates system. Zhiling immersed herself in the nuanced sensations each apparatus offered. Her commitment led her to pursue further education, culminating in her certification after completing the SMART Movement Teachers' Training course with Master Trainer Ole Eugenio. Today, Zhiling advocates for Pilates not just as exercise but as a holistic engagement of mind, body, and soul. Her goal as a teacher is to help her students enhance their performance, prevent injuries, and discover the remarkable capacities of their bodies through Pilates, just as Joseph Pilates intended—a blend of strength, flexibility, and endurance that complements and elevates any fitness regime.

Sarah Lam

Pilates Teacher

  • Sarah’s initial brush with Pilates began by chance in her 30s, when she discovered a studio next to her office. Initially not very athletic, she found Pilates to be a delightful supplement to her routine runs, adding an engaging element to her fitness regime. She developed a deeper affinity for the practice, although the full depth of Pilates remained unexplored until she returned to it years later, when she delved deeper into the principles and history of Pilates, including the pioneering work of Joseph Pilates.

This renewed journey led her to a studio where she encountered Joanne, whose clear and engaging instruction style inspired Sarah to pursue teacher training under the guidance of master trainers Ole Eugenio and Fhe Samia. The profound realisation of how intricately our bodies are designed, and how Pilates harnesses this design to enhance movement and functionality, reshaped her understanding of wellness. This awareness brought her to a deeper mission: to teach Pilates not merely as exercise but as a holistic practice that fosters a vital connection with one’s body. Sarah’s commitment extends beyond personal practice; she is driven by a vision to empower others, particularly the aging population and Scoliosis clients, to embrace their bodily health and enjoy a life of mobility and dignity. Through her teaching, Sarah hopes to impart a deep, functional understanding of Pilates that enriches lives far beyond the studio.

Maegan Teh

Pilates Teacher

  • Maegan’s journey into fitness began with a personal mission to regain strength and mobility after pregnancy and ankle surgery. Starting with dance fitness and strength training through Jazzercise, she discovered how movement not only strengthened her ankle but also transformed her approach to wellness. As a Jazzercise instructor, Maegan developed a deep understanding of movement and muscles, helping clients enjoy high-intensity workouts safely and without injuries.

In early 2024, Maegan faced health challenges that affected her balance and strength. Turning to Pilates for rehabilitation, she found it to be a powerful tool for rebuilding her coordination, muscle strength, and stability. This journey led her to discover Classical Pilates with Altum, which completely reshaped her perspective on movement and wellness. Inspired by its transformative impact, Maegan is currently undergoing her Classical Pilates teacher training with Altum Pilates.

Maegan’s certifications include Jazzercise and Barre Body Reformer Pilates. She specialises in working with teenagers and clients managing scoliosis, drawing on her own experiences to help others build strength, balance, and confidence.

Pat Cheong

Pilates Teacher-Apprentice

  • Pat has always lived an active life, from competing in netball and volleyball to exploring Muay Thai, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. With eight years in the fitness industry, she focused on weight training and yoga—until a role managing a Pilates studio led her to her first class. Expecting something easy, she was instead humbled by the challenge, precision, and depth of the work. That moment sparked a deep curiosity that eventually led her to Classical Pilates teacher training at Altum Pilates.

Her passion for movement deepened when her sedentary mother suffered an elbow fracture. Dedicated to helping her recover, Pat realised her true calling—to guide people toward better movement, strength, and resilience. She is now on the path to specialising in rehabilitation, with the goal of shifting the mindset that injuries mean stopping movement.

When she’s not immersed in her studies or self-practice, Pat helps manage Altum Pilates (she’s likely the first smile you see at the studio!) and keeps her creative side alive through painting, music, and a well-earned glass of wine.
